%. >> and governor jindal was visibly annoyed by mitt romney ease comments. but the question may be, did he do a good job in speaking for republicans, trying to find a way forward? a different way? >> i think governor jindal said all things. the test will come in the months and years about the positions the republican party will have to change. the first test in the fiscal cliff negotiation. are they going to continue to insist that the people at the top who make the most money should not participate in solving the problem. are they going to insist in the beginning of next year when we turn to immigration reform that they're not going to help solve the problem of coming up with a comprehensive immigration reform bill. the problem for the republicans is they have to change positions. when they change positions people in the base will be very unhappy, and it's going to divide the party. but governor jindal is saying all the right things. the questions will be do the actions follow his words? >> also looking back to try to understand what happened during the 2012 election, running mate paul ryan, as you

governor romney was elaborated on what axlerod said about the obama campaign's effort to target key demographics, specifically women. other republicans in a bid to avoid party imlation pushed back including governor bobby jindal. >> absolutely reject that notion that description. i think that's absolutely wrong. i don't think that represents where we are as a part and where we're going as a party. that's got to be one of the most fundamental takeaways from the election. >> joining us discuss all of this and more, republican strategic mark mckinnon co-founder of no labels which aims to get political leaders to stop fighting and start fixing. a lot needs to be fixed. i guess i wonder, as someone that has watched this election cycle, what you make of the ashes that have resulted at the end of it, which is to say, how does the republican party go on and what do they need to do from here? you see two various factions of the party, mitt romney on one side, someone like bobby jindal seemingly on the other? >> i come down squarely with governor jindal. the last thing the party needs to do i
to speaking with governor romney, sitting down in the coming weeks to discuss ways you could work together on this nation's problems have you extended that invitation? has he accepted? and what ways do you think you can work together? >> we haven't scheduled something yet. i think everybody forgets the election was only a week ago. i know i've forgotten, i forgot on wednesday. i think everybody needs to catch their breath. i'm sure that governor romney is spending time with his family. and my hope is before the end of the year, though, we have a chance to sit down and talk. there are certain aspects of governor romney's record and his ideas that i think could be very helpful. to give you one example, i think he did a terrific job running the olympics. and that skill set of trying to figure out how do we make something work better applies to the federal government. there are a lot of ideas that i don't think are partisan ideas but are just smart ideas about how can we make the federal government more customer friendly, how can we make sure that we're consolidating programs that are duplicat
. governor romney was simply elaborating on what obama senior strategist axelrod said about the effort to target key demographics, namely women. is this an example of why exactly romney lost? >> yes. it's basically what he said out loud in public. he confirmed that it was what he did think. it sounds like he really does think that. financial gifts to people is not really what happened. lots of republicans are really critical of this as well. they don't think it's helpful. mitt romney is going to be an irrelevant figure in the republican party any way. that is very unwise remark. >> this is bobby jindal, louisiana governor. guys, we don't have the sound bite? >> actually reject the notion, that description. i think that's absolutely wrong. i don't think that represents where we are as a party. >> absolutely wrong. testifies a surrogate for mitt romney. is romney now kryptonite for the republican party? >> i think he has been for a long time. romney is not the only one in the party talking like this. we heard a lot of this kind of sentiment earlier on in the campaign. not just with his 4
election. there has been mostly complimentary talk about governor romney saying he was a good man. he also had a good plan but there has been talk about he never really connected fully with the american people. to that point, governor jindal was asked about a comment romney made on a conference call yesterday with donors. he said he lost because president obama offered, quote gifts to young people and minorities. jindal rejected that and alluded to romney's damaging 47% comment, saying the gop had to fight for 100% of the vote. >> let's show we're the party not of big banks, wall street, of bailouts, not big business. we're the party that stands for families and small businessings, those simply working hard to pay their bills so their kids can get even better jobs. >> reporter: there's also been a lot of talk about the hispanic vote. of course president obama got 71%. mitt romney just 27%. compare that to the 44% that president bush got in 2004. you can see the party has its demographics problem. they're talking about softening their stance on immigration. possibly talking about, comprehen
and not the reason governor romney lost. what's the reaction been like in washington? >> republicans are very disappointed by this, and there are three big reasons. first of all, this is sour grapes, like this certainly isn't gracious. second, it's just not accurate. there were many, many other factors that were involved, gifts to minorities were not the reason that president obama won the white state of new hampshire, the largely white state of iowa. it's not why he won the hometown of paul ryan, janesville, wisconsin. so there's just a factual issue. but third and biggest, and this is where you heard the louisiana governor, bobby jindal, installed yesterday as the chairman of the republican governors association. this is where you heard him coming in, that republicans say this is a just-doesn't-get-it moment for romney. it makes republicans think that the 47% comment was no slip of the tongue. at his press conference in las vegas yesterday, governor jindal, our reporter, says became visibly agitated about this and said these comments were absolutely wrong. and they come at a time when almos
. hilary, you just heard the governor of louisiana, bobby jindal, he's very critical of mitt romney, the campaign he ran. what did you make of that? >> well, i think there's just a whole lot of distancing going on. pretty typical after a losing campaign. i thought, you know, governor jindal spoke well about some of the mistakes republicans have made. a little bit of a mixed message. i think this was a values election, not the demographic election that some people like governor jindal and mitt romney have been talking about. so i think he needs to be clearer about those values. he did say we ought to not be protecting tax cuts -- you know, tax policies for the wealthy. i think the challenge for somebody like governor jindal who just is sort of sitting back and criticizing now is to take on republicans that are relevant. because mitt romney's no longer relevant. go to john boehner, go to mitch mcconnell and say let's promote these policies that help poor people that help the middle class that promote jobs. that's what the president's been trying to do. that's what he's calling for in

governor bobby jindal took exception to mr. romney's comments. >> i think that is absolutely wrong. we have got to stop dividing the american voters. we need to go after 100% of the votes, not 53%. we need to go after every single vote. you to connect your policies to the aspirations of the american people. i don't think the cam pape did that. as a result, this became a contest between personalities and chicago loves that. >> eric: here is where i am. i'll throw it out there quickly. i think the republicans need to focus their attention. some people may be too far right and some may be close to the center for you. pick a lane, republicans. get behind someone and win an election. this infighting is no good for me. >> greg: i kind of disagree. this is called a hate fact. it's a fact that people hate. this is how obama won. however, you do have to go after every vote. but you have to play the game they do. that is what the argument is about. even loves santa claus on christmas morning but no one wants the credit card in january. until that bill is due, which will probably come in mandarin the
governor bobby jindal, a former romney surrogate, called the comments absolutely wrong. >>> and oil giant bp is expected to plead guilty today for its role in the massive 2010 gulf oil spill. as part of a reported deal with the justice department, bp would admit to criminal misconduct and pay what could be the largest penalty in u.s. history, in the billions of dollars. in exchange, the company would be exempt from prosecution. some workers could face manslaughter charges for things that happened during the spill. >>> and the end of twinkies could be just hours away. now, everybody, hugs after the show. maker of the snack cakes, as well as wonder bread, has given its striking workers an ultimatum. return to work by 5:00 p.m. today or it will start liquidating the company in bankruptcy court. some 18,000 jobs and the happiness of millions is at stake. >>> finally, a boys' football team in oklahoma just turned the field into a field of dreams for their coach's son. take a look at this. 9-year-old jason smith jr., football fanatic. but he's in a wheelchair because of muscular dystrophy. so,
